Animal Ingredients A to Z (2nd Edition)
By the E.G.Smith Collective.
This easy-to-use, concise reference for vegans, vegetarians, the health conscious, and curious alike, documents over 2000 animal and animal-derived ingredients. In the two months I have had this book it has been my constant companion to supermarkets and the like.
Drawn from such sources as PETA, the US Vegan Society and manufacturers themselves, cross-checked and referenced, this handy book helps to de-mystify concerns over postage stamps, teas and maple syrup.
This book isn't designed to make one paranoid or anxious, more like it's designed to make one smarter with added suss.
For example did you know that Carmine (which I see everywhere) -- is a red pigment from the crushed female cochineal insect. Reportedly 70,000 beetles may be killed to produce one pound of this red dye. What's more it's used in shampoos, cosmetics, red apple sauce and other foods.
How about this: did you know that Amylase is an enzyme prepared from the pancreas of pigs and it is used in cosmetics and medicines? And what about this: bakers really do put ground chicken feathers in bread as a "flour extender." This monstrosity is an additive called 920 and is L-cysteine hydrocloride!!
It took two years to compile this list and it consists of painstaking data and research -- an invaluable tool and there's plenty of obscure references to keep the most stringent among us happy.
An Oink shop volunteer tells me they have been waiting well over eight months for its arrival. Was it worth the wait? You bet your carbamide uric acid it was!
The E.G.Smith Press Collective compiled this book and they have been as through and correct as possible. All information comes from reliable sources, there's a chapter on vegan nutrition; over 150 listings complete with explanations and alternatives; over 200 beers, wines and information on the ever confusing world of cider. There are alphabetical listings of animal-derived ingredients and ingredients that can sometimes be animal derived and others that are just plain out-right dodgy. In short, a through resource guide with integrity. Thoroughly recommended.
