FERAL ANIMALS TARGETED
Despite the overwhelming evidence that demise of native species is directly related to loss of habitat, non-native animals are still targeted. The question must be asked - who gains? Australia's 22 million cattle and 140 million sheep have done and are doing enormous damage to the land. However this is seldom mentioned. A powerful and lucritive industry, with all its supporting industries, ensure that the blame goes elsewhere. An useful target is Feral Animals. No-one owns THEM and like any other recipients of war propaganda, the public become used to the daily rundown of slaughter.
"SATELLITES BRING DEATH IN THE WAR ON FERAL ANIMALS" Satellite imaging is being used for the first time to track feral animals, that spread disease, damage the environment and cost millions of dollars in lost farm production each year.
"Highly magnified pictures are pinpointing the habitats of foxes, rabbits, wild pigs and goats around Goulburn. The habitats are to be targeted with intensive poisoning programs" Under NSW legislation, Landholders are forced to destroy any feral foxes, goats or cats on their property. And our children also are being given the lethal message. 1n 1996, students at Normanhurst Boys High school, out on an excursion, hurled a baby goat off a cliff in order to kill it. (Killing was one of three options suggested by their Teacher.) The animal was badly injured but not killed, so the students retrieved the goat and threw it off the cliff again. Before the excursion, students had been given an address on noxious animals by the Rural Lands Protection Board. They had been told by the Board that Goats are considered noxious and are feral animals and that landowners have a legal obligation to kill them all. |
