THE COMMERCIAL EXPLOITATION OF AUSTRALIAN NATIVE WILDLIFE

(b) The Koala

Last year National Parks and Wildlife Service in SA were set to kill 2000 koalas on Kangaroo Island, because their habitat could not sustain them. Only public outcry prevented this slaughter in favour of fertility control.

As New Scientist reported:
"In the past, as numbers grew, government biologists would move the koalas to other sites."

Now Agriculture and forestry have taken over the areas. There is nowhere for the koalas to go. The Australian Koala Foundation says the Victorian Government should spend its money planting more manna gums.

"The Government should admit it has a shambles on its hands. Poor land management, including a history of dumping animals in unsuitable areas, is to blame."
