Addendum by Kate North, academic researcher
There have been five mass extinctions of species in the past and many scientists think we're on the verge of another. It takes 5-10 million years to get back biodiversity after a mass extinction. The scientist Terborgh, reported in the April copy of Earth 1997 said this:
"There will be an enormous surge of extinctions as the last hectare of forest falls to chain saws. Many habitats are disappearing incredibly rapidly. They will be gone in 50 to 100 years." Norman Myers, an environmental consultant in Oxford, says:
"The forces of habitat destruction have built up such a momentum that turning them round will be like turning a supertanker." Killing feral animals is pointless. Any damage done by introduced hooved animals cannot compare with that done through agriculture and the grazing of cattle and sheep. Introduced predators are light years from causing the damage brought about by urbanisation and pollution, ozone layer damage and Greenhouse. We are in a crisis situation. Whatever money and time is available must be used to combat these dreadful problems. The concentration on Feral Animals is fiddling while the world burns. |
