Stop the cruel commercialisation of wildlife!

Will you please help us? Fried crispy possum, anyone? With the opening of the first possum abattoir in Tasmania, fried crispy possum is the new taste thrill on menus here and overseas.

After the captive bolt pistol was used, possums were flung into plastic crates. By this time the crates were full of blood, with animals writhing round . . . I witnessed one possum trying to crawl out . . . covered in blood.

The bird was permanently chained to a post in the centre of a concrete area in Mexico City. Beneath the tight metal chain , the leg was starting to rot. The bird had one dislocated hip from continual attempts to fly, only to be pulled back again and again by the chain.

Do you know what is about to happen to Australia's wildlife?Proposed new laws will allow wild birds and animals to be exported live - many to eke out weary lives as "pets" in countries far from home and die early deaths from stress and lack of proper care. Others will end up in street markets, in zoos, as experimental animals or in wildlife farms. All will suffer stress. Many will suffer cruelty. Many will die in transit. Already our wildlife is being exported as "meat" to titillate jaded palates and bring in export dollars - dollars which could be better earned through eco-tourism. Politicians will do what we let them get away with. Don't let them reduce our wildlife to the values of the market place.
