Tips for Holding your own Animal Liberation Event
If you're thinking of holding your own demonstration or stall in your local area, but don't know where to start, the following tips will hopefully help you out!
Organising the Location
- If you would like to set up a stall at a Community Event or at a local shopping centre, you should contact the Event Co-ordinators / Shopping Centre Management to discuss the following:
- Dates and Times
- Available space
- Fees charged for space
- Once you have confirmed your location, make sure you re-confirm it before the event
- Make sure you obtain "on-the-day" contact details for Event Co-ordinators / Centre Management and provide them with yours
- If occupying a place at a Community Event, check whether you are obligated to have the stall running from and to particular hours
- On the day, leave at least an hour to set up your stall
- If you plan on erecting any structures or signs which involve putting stakes into the ground, make sure you have permission for this from Event Co-ordinators
Organising Volunteers
- Work out what day and time, and how many hours you will need people for
- Then work out how many people you will need or would like involved in your event – if you need more volunteers, contact us. Remember, things can go wrong on the day, so it's better to have one too many than one too little!
- Once you've established people's availability, develop a roster and distribute it to all volunteers
- Let all volunteers know what you would like them to bring, such as posters or banners etc, or if you will be needing people to wear costumes etc
- Provide all volunteers with your contact details and obtain theirs
Materials
- Work out what materials you will need to set up a stall, such as tables, chairs, stakes for securing items into the ground, banners, signs, costumes, wet weather precautions such as tarp / umbrellas etc and make sure you have a way of easily transporting these items to and from the event
- Make sure you have adequate posters to make your stall stand out and get the message across to passers-by
- Make sure you have plenty of flyers to hand out
- Get people to bring their own home-made posters / banners if appropriate
- If you wish to have petitions signed, make sure you have clipboards, pens, and plenty of copies of the petition
- The office will provide you with most materials free of charge
Donations
- You should advise any interested parties that secure online donations can be made through the Animal Liberation NSW website by going to the Donate link
- If you wish to conduct fundraising activities, you should contact Animal Liberation's campaign co-ordinators at sydneyhq@animal-lib.org.au
Animal Liberation NSW Membership
You may receive enquiries from people as to how to become a member of Animal Liberation NSW or how to be added to the email distribution list for information about current issues. You could either have printed copies of the Membership form (found in the Join Us section of this site), or direct people to the website to print and send the application themselves, and either take people's email details / direct people to the Email Sign-up section of the website to have them added to the distribution list.
Be Informed!
You and your volunteers should be equipped with enough information to answer people's questions in relation to animal liberation activities and current animal liberation issues. Please refer to the Subjects and Campaigns sections of the website for details of animal cruelty issues.
Get the Word Out There!
The more people that know about your event, the more successful it is likely to be! If you want the Animal Liberation NSW community to know more about your event, contact us.
Legal Considerations
- If staging a peaceful protest, be mindful not to obstruct public access to footpaths or facilities – police may sometimes be called by concerned onlookers but they are usually more concerned that you're not obstructing access, or engaging in inappropriate, offensive, aggressive, or violent behaviour etc
- If you are protesting outside a particular organisation, you should send them a letter prior informing them that you will be there, and why
- If participating in a community event, you should check with Event Co-ordinators whether there are any Safety / OHS (Occupational Health and Safety) issues you need to be mindful of
- Just in case someone trips over your stall or slips on a dropped leaflet (hopefully they won't!!) you should check whether you are covered by any Event Public Liability Insurance, or whether you are required to obtain your own. As a precaution, try to prevent mishaps by keeping everything secured and well marked, and not encroaching on public walkways etc
Here's to more Animal Liberation events in our community! Be sure to contact our Campaign Co-ordinators at whatshappening@animal-lib.org.au if you would like further information!
